Labyrinthine thriller set in 1930s LA, in which a private eye is hired to investigate a seemingly straightforward case of adultery and uncovers murder and scandal. The case is complicated by a femme fatale who leads the gumshoe further into a dangerous and complex web of violence and corruption. Robert Towne's screenplay won an Oscar and the film was followed by a sequel - 'The Two Jakes' - in 1990.
