Programme Information
Classic, revolutionary, crime saga starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the pair of lovers on a bank-robbing, car-stealing crime spree all around Depression-hit southern America.
Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty) is a bored, small-time bank robber whom has recently just been let out of prison. When he meets Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway), a bored small-town girl together the two form the nucleus of a gang of bank robbers who terrorized the southwest of America during the 1920s. Leaving in their wake a string of violent robberies and newspaper headlines.
Based on the true story of a pair of notorious bank robbers, the film personalizes them while still showing the violence that went along with them.
Critics at the time were horrified by the way director Arthur Penn made romantic heroes of the 1930s outlaws. Many of the big critics of the day tried to bury the picture, but it was picked up by Pauline Kael, the film critic for The New Yorker, and it began to generate its own momentum. Younger audiences loved its sense of style, Dunaway never looked sleeker, and the way it made iconic anti-heroes of the two leads.
This film received a stunning five Academy Award nominations for acting alone (Beatty, Michael J Pollard, Dunaway, Gene Hackman), and snapped up up Best Actress for Estelle Parsons. Nominated for Best Picture, Screenplay, Director and Costume Design, the film also won the Best Cinematography statuette for Burnett Guffey.
