Programme Information

Based on the controversial book by Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho charts the descent of disturbed and narcissistic yuppie Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale). By day he is a successful high-living businessman but he has a side which he keeps hidden from his friends and colleagues - his appetite for sadistic violence, murder and the music of Phil Collins. However, his murderous impulses soon start intruding into his public life, as he tries to maintain a facade of normality.

American Psycho is an extraordinary and disturbing satire that stares deep into the heart of the materialistic world of the 80s yuppie and finds only superficiality and ultra violence. Mixing extremely black comedy with shocking violence, it is Bale's superb deadpan performance that gels things together, and with Mary Harron's astute direction it becomes a film that truly lingers long after the credits roll
