Lester (Kevin Spacey) and Carolyn Burnham (Annette Bening) are on the outside, a perfect husband and wife, in a perfect house, in a perfect neighbourhood. But inside, Lester is slipping deeper and deeper into a hopeless depression.
The final stroll comes when he becomes infatuated with one of his daughter's friends. By no means (it seems) a shy girl she doesn't help his frustration with her!
Meanwhile Lester's daughter Jane is developing a friendship with a shy, strange boy-next-door named Ricky who lives with a homophobic father, although there are twists all over the storyline which lead to mysterious happenings.
The films resolution leaves its audience feeling quite weird about the films content.
