Paul Craddock (Nigel Havers) served for his country during the Boer War and, unfortunately, was left an invalid after a terrible injury.
Not sure now what to do with his life, Paul buys a manor house and estate in Devon, called Shallowford with money from his father's scrap-yard business.
He soon becomes a much-respected "Squire" in the region, who is determined to treat all his tenant farmers fairly, unlike his predecessor.
