Every episode finds Tim the "Tool Man" Taylor (Tim Allen) causing his share of goof-ups and mishaps and leaving his long-suffering wife, Jill, family and friends to mop up the mess.
Tim Taylor is your everyday DIY-loving husband but with a difference, he has his own cable show and ain't that good at DIY. He presents the show with his long-suffering side-kick, Al Borland (Richard Karn) and their tool girl, who was firstly Lisa (whom Pamela Anderson made her debut appearance playing in this show) and who has now been replaced by Heidi (Debbe Dunning).
Aswell as watching the on-set action during this series, we also follow Tim into his domestic life where he we see him acting like a complete child with a long-suffering, and very tolerant wife, Jill (Patricia Richardson) and their three sons, Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), Bradley (Zachery Ty Bryan) and Mark (Taran Noah Smith).
Another character who makes a regular appearance on the show is the lovable, understanding and advising next-door neighbour, Mr Wilson (Earl Hindman). Wilson is always at hand to offer advice over the garden fence. He is best known as the man with no face, as we only ever get to see his fore-head and eyes.
Home Improvement is one of only a handful of shows in production to use a test audience. The test group of about 20 people comes in and moves room to room with the cast as they reherse the scenes. This allows the cast and producers to judge the audience reaction to a scene and make any last minute changes as nessesary.
