The ever popular, and pretty, high school student, Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik) is in a bit of a quandary.
Although she is one of the most popular girls at school and has a legion of men at her beck and call, a family rule forbids her from dating. Until, that is, her older more unpopular and more rebellious boy-hating sister Kat (Julia Stiles) gets a date herself.
The chances of this happening are a million to one. Bianca realises this, and so does her suitor-to-be Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan).
Refusing to help her little sister by dating someone for the sheer hell of it, Joey desperately attempts to set Kat up with another school rebel, Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) who may just be able to win her hardened heart.
But will the appearance of love be enough to crack her hard veneer?
