Poirot tells an astonished Hastings that he has made up his mind to retire and suggests they take a holiday in the Lake District. But when Hastings befriends a young woman who has lost a valuable collection of miniatures, he is relieved to learn that Poirot's thoughts of retirement soon recede into the distance.
