Channel Information
TG4 is the national Irish language television service. It provides a comprehensive schedule of award-winning Irish language programming (including its own daily news service) with an emphasis on original material. The channel's Irish language schedule currently comprises six four and a half hours daily.
TG4 broadcasts on a terrestrial network and is also delivered by cable. It functions as a publisher/broadcaster, sourcing its programmes from the independent production sector and from RTE. TG4 headquarters are located in Baile na hAbhann in Connemara. In addition to the core Irish language schedule, the TG4 channel also provides a sustaining schedule of programmes in other languages, inlcuding English, with feature films documentaries and sport. This includes coverage of Ministers' Question Time from Dail Eireann (the national parliament) each sitting day.
By March 2000 TG4's daily audience reach was averaging 550,000 viewers. Approximately 80% of tv sets in the Republic had tuned in to receive the channel by that date.
TG4 receives IR?14m from the Exchequer each year towards its running costs. It also benefits from a provision of over 360 hours a year of programming from RTE, produced at no cost to TG4, which RTE has costed at ?6m annually. TG4 also sells advertising airtime and is involved in programme sponsorship.
TG4 itself employs a core staff of less than 50 to carry out its key administrative, programme - commissioning and acquisition functions as well as providing the technical and presentation skills necessary for a television publisher/broadcaster. Most of the 300 jobs sustained by TG4 are in independent production and postproduction companies.
