The UK's leading broadcaster of live and specially recorded classical music, BBC Radio 3 sets the standard for cultural broadcasters around the globe.
The network features music from across the range of the classical repertory, jazz, new music, traditional music from around the world and experimental music from the lunatic fringe of contemporary rock, classic and experimental drama, poetry, cultural debate, documentaries, features and new writing.
Radio 3 grew out of the BBC Third Programme, founded in 1946, and the Music Programme of the Sixties. It remains firmly rooted in this tradition of excellence and innovation. While recent developments include a concerted attempt to reach out to the whole audience for classical music, the range and ambition of programmes remain the envy of the world.
Our challenge is to make sure this astonishing range of material reaches everyone, expert or novice, who wants to discover more. We want Radio 3 to be an inspiration and an education, enjoyable, stimulating, popular and challenging.
